One at a time

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

I’ve decided that, instead of writing one big, long post, I’ll go picture by picture with a little story attached to each. That makes life way easier, cause let’s face it, who has time to write a post with 20+ pictures? Surely, not I. So we begin…

Vegas was not at all what I expected. I’ve seen it in the movies and in tv shows, but those two mediums can’t quite articulate Las Vegas. More on that later…

We stayed at the Four Queens Hotel and Casino in downtown, aka Old Vegas. I didn’t realize there were two parts to Vegas, the old and the new. The old is radically different from the new. In this part of town lies all the long forgotten structures of our forefathers. These are the places where the rat pack drank, performed, womanized, and puffed finely wrapped cigars long into the night air. These are the hotels with golden yellow lights covering every surface and oriface. These are the hotels that were once spectacular and grand, but now are the gaudy, loud, cliche spectre’s of an over-the-top era. It is in this sad, old grandeur of Las Vegas, that the Four Queens sits. Sure the halls smelt of nursing homes and were decorated with the poorest of art, but for $30 a night, I wasn’t complaining (much). Though, it was a bit sad to see all the old ladies, buckets full of nickels, wasting their lives away in front of the blinking slots.

The first night we arrived, we got in late and were all pretty tired. Plus, CES started bright and early the next day, so we walked around a little, then called it a night. The next day would yield much more adventure.

Ok, so I promise

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

This weekend it’s coming. Also, I do want to keep writing, but I’ve felt less and less need to do it. I think I’ll try to post a couple of things a week. That’s way easier than what I was aiming for. I can’t post everyday. It’s too much. If I was chilling non-stop, it would be hard, but when working and doing other stuff, it downright crazy to even try.

Until the Vegas post, here’s a little teaser!

Little did we know, until we arrived in Vegas, that the annual porn convention and awards show was in town. Well, one of our CES exhibits was right next door (literally). As we were leaving one of the exhibits, Bergsie turned to me and said. “don’t look now, but Ron Jeremy is 10 feet behind us.” I waited a good 5 seconds, then casually glanced behind. It was him, alright, and I knew if I didn’t get a picture with him, my brother would cry. Haha. We hunted him down, and I said to him, “hey Ron, can my buddy take a picture of us?” He said, “we’re walking and talking kid, walking and talking…” And the rest is history.

I hear you Lord

Music has always been very powerful to me. In my life, it is something that makes me feel, and for that, I’m grateful, because sometimes I walk around all shades of gray. God has always used music to speak directly to me, and for that also, I’m grateful.

The elusive Thomas Newman

Tuesday, November 1st, 2005

Ask me what I’d be if I could ask God for the perfect job. Don’t be shy… Ask me. A composer. Yeah, it’s true. Composers have a talent I can’t understand. They are able to infuse their essence into sheets of paper. They translate life into the music that makes us sit back and daydream.

One of my favorite composers is Thomans Newman. I love his signature. He puts something into his compositions that is distinguished. His music brings color into my imagination. So it is dissapointing to me that more than often his pieces, mostly for pictures, are not released. There are a few gems out there, though.

One of my favorite movies is The Shawshank Redemption. Its story is vivid. Its cinematography is moving frames of art. Of course, Thomas Newman helps. He composed the score for the film. I often find myself putting the album score on repeat. See the movie, or better yet, listen to the tracks… you’ll hear why.
