ahhhh, prague…. (day one)

Monday, July 28th, 2008

(we were in prague from july 15th to july 17th)

prague is one of the most popular cities in the czech republic. it has a lot of history, and you can feel it as you walk through the city. personally, this is one of my most favorite cities so far, and i would love to go back. why? it’s the cobblestone streets lined with 15th and 16th century buildings. it’s the food, the delicious pork and potatoes and beer and fried everything and beer. wait i said that. it’s the prices. it’s one of the few places in europe where you can still get a great exchange using the US dollar. but most of all it’s the city. the city has a modern and cool feel to it. it’s old meets new everywhere you look. it’s cobblestone streets and castles and narrow alleys with dotted with little cafe’s. it’s the tall ornate street lanterns and numerous copper and stone statues. it’s just a really beautiful city.

on day one, we did what we normally do when we get somewhere. first we found our place, in this case a nice little hotel about 15 minutes walking distance away from the city center, dropped off our bags, then headed into downtown.

walking downtown was really a lot of fun. there are a number of street you can take and many of them lead to a main square lined with shops, expensive hotels, and restaurants. to get into the main square, you can go through one of a few of these really large stone arch gateways. they all stand elegantly toll and look like they’re covered with about 1000 years of history.

luckily for us, and i love it when this happens, we arrived through one of these gateways and discovered that the bohemian jazz festival was occuring that night. so there were TONS of people everywhere, great food vendors, and a big main stage with bands playing. so we spent the first night just walking around, then watching the concert while dining on some delicious and gigantic sausages.

here are some pictures from day one, july 15th.

working on more posts! (and greek islands)

Monday, July 28th, 2008

whew! finally some wi-fi internet!

sorry for the delay in posts. the farther east we go, the more spotty our internet access has become. i’m working on the posts for prague czech republic, budapest hungary, and i’ll try to squeeze salzburg austria in too. then i just have to post for vienna austria and then thessaloniki greece, then instanbul turkey and i’m all caught up!

by the way, we’ve decided which greek islands we’re going to go to. tomorrow we catch a flight from here to the greek island of crete, then we’re going to head the the white housed cliffs (white villas, blue roofs, you’ve seen them probably) on the island of santorini, then it’s off to ios, a desert in the ocean and destination party for many people from all over europe. all have beautiful beaches, and boy are we excited for that. we’ve been keeping a pretty fast pace for the last 3-4 weeks, and we’re looking forward to just hanging out on white and black sand beaches, translucent ocean waves, and sipping cold drinks while european people watching. some of them have some really interesting hair do’s…. maybe more on that later.

austa la vista, berlin. we’ll be back!

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

(we left berlin on july 15th for prague)

well berlin, you’ve been a good friend. sure you smell funny, but you were built on a bog, it’s not your fault and we won’t hold it against you. your beauty and class make it easy to overlook that. and you’re still a young city. it’s only been 19 years since the wall fell, so it’s ok. we can overlook your flaws. we still love you. and although we’re leaving you for now, we’ll do our best to come visit you from time to time.

berlin continued (july 14th & 15th)

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

on the evening of the 13th, we moved to another side of berlin to stay with lars.  he was really cool.  on the 14th and 15th, we saw a lot more of berlin.  we went on a bike tour, and saw a lot more of eastern berlin, the side that was communist.  i feel like we really got to know the city on these days.  that bike tour was something we should have done the first day we arrived.  it was filled with historical landmarks, city history, and really gave you a good taste of who berlin was and who it has become.

the pictures below were taken on mostly on the 14th and 15th, but there are some from the 12th and 13th too : D

ps there’s video below the gallery pictures…

here’s some video from the bike tour…

on our break during the tour, we sat around at this strip of restaurants. this lady in front of us fed these birds and finally the birds decided to fly up and grab the food right out of her hand. she’s brave, those little beaks make me nervous…

dirty, stinky, beautiful, berlin (july 12th and 13th)

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

We arrived in berlin germany sweden on July 12th and were there until the 15th.

The first night, we stayed with a really friendly guy named Thomas.   He lived in a pretty young, hip neighborhood. Unfortunately he was studying for tests while we were there so we couldn’t hang out with him all that much.  But we did get to walk around that area of berlin a bit.  It was a great introduction to the city.  It wasn’t that close to downtown, so we really got a good feel of life around the university.  We ran into a street bazaar which was really interesting.  It was full of german people looking very german selling all sorts of absolute junk to each other.

We also saw a bit of the berlin wall and were introduced to a young city recovering from communism.  That story unfolded more and more as we explored this wonderful, east meets west city.

here is some video of us getting a little lesson from thomas about the wall

we’ve been robbed : (

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Well, even though we’ve been super careful, it’s happened, and boy were these guys slick…

We always watch out for pickpockets, and do our best to always have an eye on our stuff whenever we’re not carrying it. But sometimes, you just gotta sleep, and of course, it’s hard to keep your eyes on your bags when they’re behind your closed eyelids.

Our 6 hour train ride from budapest, hungary to salzburg, austria, was pretty normal. We left around 9pm and weren’t going to arrive until about 3am in salzburg. We stayed up for most of the train ride, but around midnight both ruth and I started getting tired so decided to snooze for a bit. We were in a small room with six seats. There was a nice old man in one of the two window seats, and then us.

About 1 or 2 am, some big guy came barging into the room wanting to sit down. He was noisy and woke us up, so we both got a good look at him. It wasn’t that unusual for a person to come in to want to sit down, afterall, if the seats aren’t reserved, anyone can sit there. Well he stayed in the room for about 30 minutes or so, then got up and left. Ruth was asleep, but I was only half asleep the whole time.

About 20 minutes before we were to arrive. Ruth decided to make a quick trip to the bathroom on the train -better to pee for free than pay 1 euro  to go at the train station when we got off. While in the train car bathroom, she saw some black straps hanging out from the garbage. Curious, she decided to check it out because those straps looked like money wallet straps (it straps around your waist). So investigating, she pulled the straps and out of the garbage and out came exactly that, a money wallet. She opened it and inside, surprisingly found her passport and our $1500 Eurail pass, which if lost, is non-refundable. Stunned, she came back into our little room and showed it to me. At first we thought she dropped it but, coming around, and seeing that all the money was gone from it (luckily she only had about 1500 hungarian forints, about $10 US), we realized that big dude who came in had robbed her bag. He took her money wallet and also her digital camera. I was sleeping with my bag so he couldn’t touch mine. Luckily, although we normally keep ruth’s macbook in her small bag too, that night we had put it next to her big bag in the bag lofts above our seats, otherwise he would have stolen that too.

I praise the lord she found her money wallet. If she had lost her passport and our eurorail pass, we would have been in dire straits. Like I said, the rail pass is not refundable, so on top of losing the money we paid for it, we would have also paid cash for every train we took for the rest of the trip… a normal train trip can cost 60-200 euros, or about 90-300 dollars.

The good news is her camera was insured, so she is getting another one and we’ll have it when we meet her brother in croatia. But the crappy part is we lost a bunch of great video from prague in the czech republic, and also budapest in hungary. We still have pictures from those places from my camera (being posted soon), but we had lots of good stuff on her camera. And now we can’t do video until we get her new camera sometime around august 9th or so when we head to croatia.

So the bottom line is, those thieves are tricky. Even when you’re careful, they can still get you. Shame there are people out there who live their lives stealing from others. Downright shame…

Well we left berlin, went to prague, just left hungary, and are now in austria.  we arrived in salzburg late last night.  we haven’t been posting all that much because we’ve had hardly any internet access for ruth’s laptop.  we’ve got lots to post about and lots of pictures so those are coming up in the next couple of days.

today ruth is going to be taking a train to munich germany to visit her friend.  i am going to explore salzburg and maybe go dance in mountains with some children like julie andrews in the sound of music.  if i do i’ll try to get some pictures.

ich bin ein berliner!

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

well we made it, we arrived in berlin… the airport was a bit deceiving, it was much smaller than we thought it was going to be…

anyways, tonight we are staying with a guy named thomas. he can only host us for one night, so hopefully we’ll find someone else to stay with or it’ll be a hostel for us. we’d rather not spend the money on a hostel though.

no pictures really from tonight since we got here so late. it also took us forever to get to thomas’ place. the trains were confusing, and one didn’t start moving for about 30 minutes after we got on it. those germans….

more pictures to come tomorrow. we’re excited to explore this mysterious city…
